SODES WELCOMES THE CREATION OF THE SAGUENAY FJORD ECOSYSTEM RESEARCH GROUP

Quebec City, June 9, 2022 – The Société de développement économique du Saint-Laurent (Sodes) is delighted with yesterday’s announcement by the Institut nordique de recherche sur l’environnement et la santé au travail (INREST), in collaboration with UQAC and Université Laval, of the creation of a research group on the Saguenay Fjord ecosystem.

The creation of this group will make it possible to study the Saguenay Fjord ecosystem and habitats, as well as human influences. The scientific knowledge to be developed by these top-level researchers will help to fill out and complete our knowledge of the habitats, flora and fauna of the Saguenay Fjord.

“This $5.6 million investment, made possible by the commitment of the Port of Saguenay, Rio Tinto, Promotion Saguenay and the Government of Quebec as part of the Avantage Saint-Laurent strategy, demonstrates the importance of working together and federating local players around common issues. This knowledge development project is essential if we are to better understand the impact of shipping on the Fjord and adapt it to reconcile economic development with ecosystem protection. Mathieu St-Pierre, President and CEO of Sodes.
