The Federal Government presented yesterday the Budget 2017 which includes some proposed actions that may be beneficial to the maritime industry and its partners. While many elements of the Budget are yet to be clarified, including details pertaining to the Canada Infrastructure Bank, SODES welcomes commitments aiming at supporting Canadian trade and improving the fluidity of transport flow such as the National Trade Corridors Fund, created to ”address urgent capacity constraints and freight bottlenecks at major ports of entry, and to better connect the rail and highway infrastructure that delivers economic growth across Canada” (p. 139). Back in 2015, the SODES and its members had already identified, in a consensual manner, the need to Enhance port-land network interfaces in order to reduce congestion in the main urban centres as one of the 6 priorities to increase the volumes transported in the St. Lawrence – Great Lakes Trade Corridor and stay competitive.
