SODES to attend 85th ACFAS congress

The St. Lawrence Economic Development Council (SODES) will be on hand at the 85th ACFAS congress today to give a conference on using Marine Information System data to fuel research entitled “Système d’information maritime : des données pour stimuler la recherche” in the context of the symposium on making Québec an international leader in marine research entitled “Comment faire du Québec un phare international en recherche maritime”, organized by Réseau Québec maritime (RQM).

Conference
The conference will discuss the Marine Information System (MIS), a joint SODES-Innovation maritime project carried out in collaboration with the five Canadian port authorities located in Québec, the Canadian Coast Guard, Transport Canada, Transport Québec and the Secrétariat aux affaires maritimes (Maritime Affairs Secretariat). The project’s main goal is to set up a system to collate, process and disseminate data that is useful for marine-sector stakeholders. Significant amounts of raw data on shipping traffic and port operations are available but are currently disseminated by various organizations without pooling, overall processing and proper distribution, despite the fact that there is a significant need for this information. Ultimately, the MIS will constitute a centralized information system accessible via web portal and grouping together different marine transport-related statistics.
